I have just watched an old, bad movie marginally based on the life and loves of Vincenzo Bellini. Regardless, it put in mind to think of the five people I would like to meet hereafter—for if there is one, it will be based on pleasure and not remorse.
First I would like to meet Cicero. To hear in person a man of honor, gravitas, and intellect defend the just and good and debate de natura deorum, that would be heaven. I would have to brush up my Latin a little, but that too would be an activity for the infinite.
Maybe we could travel around a little with Chaucer. A few more baudy rimes and reasons to smile, laugh, & savor human nature here and in the hereafter.
Then to listen to Bellini. He wrote but nine operas all too seldom performed. Dead at 37, he must have written more by now: maybe an Othello or Falstaff. Imagine the pure perfection and unending delight. OK, throw in a few millenia with Donizetti and Rossini. Donizetti to hear again his melodies and enjoy that humor and cynicism. Rossini to enjoy a man who could write so much, so perfect, and then abandon it all to spend forty years in hedonistic pleasure. He must be good company.
Then I would seek out Eugene Marais.
A complex character, who got most of his conclusions about nature wrong, but his gentleness and sensitivity and powers of observation plus an opportunity to discuss findings in nature since his death would be a gift of the gods. He writes English of rare perfection, but with him I could once again chatter in Afrikaans like I did on the mines and feel again the roll of an ancient language that is all new.
The final fifth would be Pauline Smith. A conventional, well-traveled lady. But maybe I would hear more stories of people as they struggle to do good and survive in harsh surroundings. She must have insight and compassion to spare for the realities of heaven.
There is no meaning in any of this, any more than there is meaning in a movie, a comic, a ballad, or a poem. But all are fun and fascinating. As much as politics or the formulation or an engineering solution to an hitherto unsolved physical & engineering problem. Such as you find everyday in mining. Go out and enjoy them all.
