The heat is bringing out the nuts. The low hanging fruit are the professors who are doing silly things and making asinine statements. We all know about that Harvard fellow who got the President into a pickle—or was it the president who blundered into another misjudgement of old men who sound profound, but who in reality are no more than loud, empty drums–recall that Reverend Wright. This time it was Gates, described by one blogger thus:
Gates was the Ivy League professor who moved to a white area, started living as a white liberal as soon as he arrived, and looks down on blue-collar cops like Crowley. His snobbish attitude was captured in the alleged threat to the white cop that he did not know who he was dealing with.
In the mining world we have the sweltering heat in Vancouver promoting a local rag promoting an Australian professor of mining engineering saying global warming is a natural phenomenon with no connection to human activity. A quote from the report:
Plimer presents the proposition that anthropogenic global warming is little more than a con trick on the public perpetrated by fundamentalist environmentalists and callously adopted by politicians and government officials who love nothing more than an issue that causes public anxiety.
Apparently Plimer has written sixty books and papers on the subject. How he keeps his position at a school of mining at Adelaide University is a question I cannot answer. Maybe it is a very non-liberal school of mining and they relish the chance to thumb their noses at Liberals. He is reported as believing in evolution though.
Yesterday I wondered out of the sun at the heated pool of the local townhouse complex into the “library” in the clubhouse besides the pool. There was a discarded book by Ann Coulter, blond and near naked on the cover of The Church of Liberalism Godless. Now here is a nut case. She would be very funny if she were not so serious. She would be effective if she were not so illogical. Her skill and practice is that of a minister of propaganda in the Nazi Ministry of Misinformation. She presents the case that liberals worship global warming and evolution. She believes in creationism.
It would be fun to get her to debate the mining professor. Not enlightening, but fun. A kind of love/hate fest. It would help them both sell their books although it would bring no enlightenment. Both would probably provide support for the theory of human dominion over the earth and hence the right to unfettered mining. Maybe the SME can get them on the stage at next year’s annual convention. They would be at least as entertaining as the fellow who told the tale of the hippos that ate the green tomatoes.
