Late evening in Santiago, but still I must post this information. At this link you will find a fascinating book put out by the Mining Association of Canada and the PDAC. It is called 100 Innovations in the Mining Industry. It takes a while to download, but be patient. The resultant product is well worth the wait.
Indeed there are listed and described here 101 innovations in the mining industry. Most were new to me. But all brought a sense of pride that the mining industry is so innovative.
The text is brief; the illustrations profuse; the overall impression impressive. If any of your anti-mining friends gripe and whine, then this is the document with which to hit them. This is proof positive that mining, albeit one of the oldest of professions, is also one of the most newest and innovative of professions. Always ready to find and implement new and better ways to do things and make for more effective, efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally sound mining.
I suggest we produce a series of these documents. I for one, know of many innovations in tailings management. Enough to fill a book. Why not let us spread the message of new, innovative, and conscientious mining.
Of course there will always be scallywags and even evil people in mining—as in any walk of life—so let us negate them by spreading the message of good mining. This little (5 inch by 5 inch) document is as good a start as any.
