Many miners go to Santiago, Chile to do mining. The country is mining boom country. Their engineers are skilled and able. Yet they need augmentation by international mining folk. Reasons include: too few engineers; a search for new ideas; international perspective; and mine ownership by foreign mining companies footing the bill and hence wanting control.
Most meetings start with a mining heath and safety moment. Here are two not conventionally covered.
My colleague had his suitcase stolen outside the hotel as he waited for the cab to arrive. A beautiful young woman distracted him; a few young guys surrounded him and her; and next he looked his suitcase and briefcase were gone; as were the beautiful young wonman and her accomplices.
The hotel is in a fashionable part of town. The streets are lined with trees and flowers. The place is peaceful and seemingly safe. But obviously it is not.
The lesson learnt from this is that there is no place in the city that you, as a miner or consultant from abroad, are safe in person or possession. At any moment they may surround you, and in the most seemingly nice place, take your possessions.
The second incident from my recent trip to Santiago is from a friend who was staying in a posh hotel. At one past mid-night there was a genuine fire alarm set off by smoke in the kitchen. He trudged to the foyer. Nobody was noting guests coming down. Nobody was directing patrons to an assembly area. In the end, but fifteen guests came down. The rest slept or stayed in their rooms and nobody went to alert them.
None died. But many could have had the fire been fast and fierce. The lesson learnt is that there is little respect for fire procedures in at least one Santiago hotel. My friend advised his client not to put their staff or consultants in that hotel again. You are on your own in a fire in Santiago hotels.
Point is that it is not Kansas. It is not Vancouver or Perth. It is another place and elementary logic and these incidences tell you to be specially alert. Even though you feel comfortable and safe.
Good and safe travels.
