This a brief picture of the Chinese in mining in Vancouver.
I got into the elevator on the ninth floor. The elevator stopped at the fifth floor. I was delayed by this scene:
A middle-age man of no particular stature was entering the elevator. He was bowing and grovelling to two persons in the foyer of the fifth floor.
The two persons were two small, fifty-year old Chinese. One was a man; one was a woman. Both were impeccably dressed. Both were bowing, and smiling the inscrutable smile.
As the elevator door closed, I asked the white man if these were his clients.
“I hope they soon will be” was his reply. “They have lots of Chinese money to invest in Canadian mining.”
And there is the new face of Chinese mining in Vancouver.
