Just released is a new InfoMine map of the major mines and metallurgical facilities in Europe. You can find it to order at this link.
Two other sites on European mines are:
- euromine: European Association of Mining Industries, Metal Ores & Industrial Minerals.
- Roman Mines in Europe.
I was amazed to see the many mines in Europe on this new map. Just what percentage of the European economy is from mining? If you know, let us know. Thanks.
I clicked on “Roman mines in Europe” to see if I could find anything on the mines that were started/restarted by Harvey Mudd and his team in 1914 in the Skouriotissa district of the island of Cyprus. These mines later became the first mines owned and operated by Cyprus Mines Corporation.
I was with Cyprus for almost 20 years and always found the history of the company so interesting – in fact, I taught the history to employees, consultants and auditors. I used to tell them that we were the only mining company with a 3,000 year history – that our mines went all the way back to the Greeks and Romans who mined copper on the island of Cyprus. The Americans that went there to start up old workings brought back Greek amphoras and Roman support timbers from the mines that were displayed in the lobby of the corporate office for years.
For those that are interested, you can google Cyprus Mines Corporation and Harvey Mudd and find some interesting information about the company’s history. A book of the history of Cyprus Mines Corporation was written in 1962.
Thank You. very usefull info for me.
