There are two sets of numbers provided by Word Press on how many posting I have put on this blog. One of them tallies this as the 2,000th posting. The other say a few less. Maybe the second takes into account the postings I have taken down as they have offended readers. So let us say this is the 2,000th posting.
This blog began in March 2007 and since then I have added postings on a pretty regular basis. I have written about almost every conceivable topic related to mining and a good number that have little to do with mining. Google seems to like the blog and a search for most issues in mining brings up one or more of my past postings.
The Word Press statistics notes that there have been over 845,000 times people have read this blog, and that there have been 2,909 comments. Apparently nearly 500 people get the RSS feed of this blog and the average number of fresh hits per day varies from 600 to 1,000. All nice to know.
I regularly get people asking if they can contribute to the blog. I always turn them down as this is my perspective and I do not seek to edit other people’s writings. I get many requests to advertise on this blog, but those too I rejects as it would make me less independent were I to post adverts. I get many spam and trash comments from outfits looking to link to the blog. I delete all those too.
I get many private emails from folk seeking advice on jobs, careers, technical issues, and more. I try to answer all of these private emails. In so doing I have made many efriends and learnt a lot. I thank them all, for they have touched me and I hope I have touched them to their benefit and the benefit of mining in general.
Many have asked why I blog. I have no good answer. It is just something I do and something that brings me pleasure. And it is nice to think that it entertains and informs others in mining and beyond.
Some times I write sober. Sometimes I write drunk. You can probably discern which is which. Some postings are better than others. Some are terrible when I come to read them a few days later. No matter—for a blog is transient, a snap-shot in time and of no serious consequence.
Except that on three occasions I have provoked irate readers who have demanded that I taken down the blogs on them or their companies. I have taken down the three out of 2,000 that thus offended, mainly because I have no ax to grind with these autocrats who fear open discussion. And of course those removed pieces are elsewhere in espace, so the final word is mine.
Many of my better postings I have collated into courses that you can find on EduMine. So the better stuff has gained some permanence.
InfoMine repeats many of my blog postings in their system. I am flattered. Many other sites copy or repeat, or refer to my postings. I am doubly flattered—although some tell me to tell them to stop plagiarizing my writings.
I intend to continue blogging as long as I am able. There is always a new topic or idea that seems to me to be worth writing about. For nothing is static and nothing is fully evaluated in the common press.
So stay with me and enjoy. Thanks for reading so far and hope you continue to read and comment in the years ahead.
