Still on the theme of thirty-year olds in the work place. (See my blog posting below this one for an extended rumination on the topic of thirty-year olds in mining.) This afternoon two thirty-year olds came marketing. I must admire what they are doing. They are setting up and marketing a software company that specializes in geotechnical [...]

Weekend mining games from Caterpillar: TV as a genuine mine-training activity

The fifteen-year old, fifteen-inch TV died this weekend. Now I have a major problem: disposing of the hazardous waste supposedly inside. With only a bike to transport things, I will probably have to break the old TV into tiny parts and mix them in with kitchen waste to be sneaked into the garbage container of [...]

Playing computer games is for everyone. Here is my take at four computer games relevant to mining. Before we look at the games, let me state emphatically my basic beliefs re computer games and mining. I think it a waste of money to develop glossy brochures to hand out to students in order to encourage [...]

The catchy heading to this piece is adapted from one of the talks this afternoon at the CIM conference. The presentation was by Sean Dessureault. He set out the basic principles of data mining in the mining industry and illlustrated these principles by a case history involving examination of fuel consuption at an open pit [...]
